Footsteps with Jesus

Life moves quickly. Between work, family, errands, and everything else that fills our days, finding time for prayer can feel difficult. We want to stay close to Jesus, but sometimes we reach the end of the day and realize we have barely paused to talk with Him.

A walk can be a simple place to begin.

Prayer walking means praying as you walk, using that time to talk with God, reflect on Scripture, and pray for others. This seven-day prayer walk challenge gives you a simple focus for each day.

Whether you’re heading around the block, walking during your lunch break, or taking a few quiet steps around your home, you can use that time to pray. Bring Him your worries. Give thanks for the good things. Ask for help with whatever comes next.

For the next seven days, try setting aside a little time to walk with intention. Each day below includes a Scripture reading, a reflection, and a simple prayer to carry with you.

How to Start a Prayer Walk

Choose a time and place that fit your day. Five or ten minutes is a good beginning, but let your walk match your ability and circumstances. You can also follow these reflections while seated or resting.

Read the day’s Scripture before you begin. Then carry one thought into your walk. If your mind wanders to your grocery list or tomorrow’s meeting, gently return to your prayer. You can even talk with God about the things that keep coming to mind.

If you use Footsteps with Jesus, let your progress through Christ’s journey be another reminder to pause and reflect along the way.

Day 1: Make Room for His Presence

Read: James 4:8

We often begin our days already thinking about what needs to happen next. Today, take a moment to notice where you are.

Feel the ground beneath your feet. Look at the sky. Listen to the sounds around you. As you settle into your walk, remember that you can turn toward God right here, in the middle of an ordinary day.

You do not need to have everything sorted out before you come to Him. Begin with an honest conversation.

As you walk: Tell God how you are arriving today. Tired? Hopeful? Distracted? Let that be the beginning of your prayer.

Pray: “Jesus, here I am. Help me make room for You today. Open my eyes to Your presence and teach me to turn toward You throughout my day.”

Day 2: Walk with Gratitude

Read: 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18

Some blessings are easy to recognize. Others become so familiar that we stop noticing them.

A friend who checks in. A meal shared with family. A moment of laughter after a difficult day. Today’s walk is an opportunity to remember those gifts and thank God for them.

You may also be carrying something painful. Bring that with you, too. You can be honest about what is hard while giving thanks for the good you can see.

As you walk: Name three specific things you are thankful for. Take your time with each one.

Pray: “Lord, thank You for the ways You care for me. Help me notice the gifts I often hurry past and remember Your goodness when life feels difficult.”

Day 3: Bring Him What Feels Heavy

Read: 1 Peter 5:7

Some days, our minds are full before our feet even touch the floor. We worry about people we love, decisions we need to make, and circumstances we cannot control.

Today, bring one of those concerns into your walk.

Tell God what is troubling you. Be specific. You do not have to find the perfect words or solve the problem before you pray. Scripture invites us to bring our cares to Him because He cares for us.

As you walk: Name one worry. Ask God for help with the part you can act on and trust Him with what you cannot control.

Pray: “Jesus, You know what I am carrying. Help me trust You with this concern. Give me wisdom for my next step and remind me that I can keep bringing it to You.”

Day 4: Pray for Someone Else

Read: Ephesians 6:18

Think about the people who are part of your everyday life. Some have told you what they are going through. Others may be carrying struggles you know nothing about.

Today, let your walk become a time of prayer for them.

You might pray for a family member, a coworker, a neighbor, or someone you have lost touch with. Ask God to meet their needs, strengthen them, and surround them with care.

As you pray, consider whether there is a simple way you can offer support.

As you walk: Choose one person and pray for them by name. Afterward, consider sending a message or checking in.

Pray: “Lord, I lift up this person to You. You know what they need today. Please give them strength and comfort, and help me recognize how I can show them Your love.”

Day 5: Take a Step Toward Kindness

Read: Ephesians 4:32

Following Jesus shapes the way we treat people in ordinary moments. The conversation when we are tired. The interruption when we are busy. The opportunity to listen when we would rather move on.

Today, think about one place where you could respond with more kindness.

Perhaps someone needs your patience. Perhaps you need to apologize. There may be a small act of help you have been meaning to offer.

Let your prayer lead to something you can do.

As you walk: Ask God to bring one person or situation to mind. Choose a practical act of kindness for today.

Pray: “Jesus, help me see people with compassion. Give me patience when I feel frustrated and humility when I get things wrong. Show me one way to care for someone today.”

Day 6: Trust Him with the Next Step

Read: Proverbs 3:5–6

It is comforting to know where we are going. We like clear directions and a good idea of what lies ahead.

But some seasons leave us with questions. A decision remains unresolved. A plan changes. The future looks different from what we expected.

As you walk today, talk with God about something that feels uncertain. Ask for wisdom and a willingness to follow His guidance, even when you cannot see the whole path.

As you walk: Consider one faithful step you can take today. It might be asking for advice, having a conversation, or making time to listen before deciding.

Pray: “Lord, I do not know how everything will work out. Help me trust You, seek Your wisdom, and take the next step with faith.”

Day 7: Look Back and Keep Walking

Read: Colossians 3:17

Take a moment to look back over the week.

Was there a prayer you returned to more than once? Did you notice something you usually overlook? Did you reach out to someone or find a few quiet minutes in a busy day?

Some walks may have felt peaceful. Others may have been distracted or cut short. Each one gave you an opportunity to turn toward Jesus.

Think about what helped you make that time. A morning walk? A few minutes after lunch? Choose something simple enough to carry into the week ahead.

As you walk: Thank God for one moment from this week. Then choose a time for your next prayer walk.

Pray: “Jesus, thank You for meeting me in these everyday moments. Help me keep making time for You and carry what I have prayed into the way I live.”

Keep Walking with Purpose

A prayer walk can fit into the life you already have. You can pray along a familiar route, on your way to an errand, or during a few quiet minutes at home.

If you miss a day, begin again when you can. Return to a reflection that meant something to you. Invite a friend to join you, or use the same seven prompts for another week.
